Job Description

The Cal Adventures Sailing Program operates from the Berkeley Marina at the UC Aquatic Center. Classes occur on weekends from March-November and occasional classes or custom events occur midweek.

  • Instruct Adult Sailing courses as scheduled by the Community Programs Manager
  • Instruct private lessons as requested by students
  • Instruct sailing custom events as scheduled by Community Programs Manager
  • Assist in the revision and development of curriculum on file for instructors
  • Ensure student and staff paperwork is being filled out in accordance to class policy
  • Demonstrate safety assurance and control when on the water and in the classroom
  • Periodic equipment inspections and minor repairs
  • Enforce equipment organization and care among sailing staff, renters and students
  • Facilitate the increase of knowledge about the natural environment, experiential education practices, group dynamic, weather and equipment care
  • Man the rescue boat during class for ease of access to students in separate vessels
  • Serve as a representative of Cal Adventures to participants
  • Assist in updating Cal Adventures managers on specific site conditions and hazards
  • Attend required trainings for sailing staff
  • Other projects as assigned

Minimum Skill Requirements

  • High level of experience and comfort level in high wind dinghy sailing and sailing instruction
  • Experience leading sailing classes for both adults and youth
  • Familiarity with San Francisco Bay and the South Sailing Basin at the Berkeley Marina
  • Demonstrated experience serving in a leadership role
  • CPR and First Aid  - or the ability to attain these certifications by the first day of employment.
  • Well organized, self motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual

Preferred Skills

  • Competence, experience and skill with the use of small motor boats as teaching aids and rescue craft
  • US Sailing Instructor Certification or equivalent
  • Motor boat safety certification
  • Experience with a cash register
  • Experience in kayaking, rafting, windsurfing or teambuilding
