What We Offer

Intramural Sports offers you the opportunity to participate in your favorite sport on a competitive or recreational level. Leagues are available in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor sports year-round, including basketball, soccer, softball, volleyball, and tennis.

Who Can Play?

Anyone with a Cal Rec Club membership can join an Intramural Sports team.*  You can form a team of your own or enter a league as a Free Agent and be placed on a team.

*There are restrictions on participation for current and former intercollegiate athletes, current Sport Club athletes, and other "highly competitive" athletes.  Captains who wish to place this type of participant on their roster should contact the Intramural Sports Director.

CAPTAINS ARE DISCOURAGED FROM ADDING PLAYERS TO THEIR ROSTER ON GAMEDAY.

Captains:  If you miss the weekly deadline and allow a player to be added to your team's roster manually (on gameday), YOU TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY for ensuring that participant has a valid membership.  The online roster system protects you from adding an ineligible player.  You are strongly advised not to add players manually to your roster on game day.  Any participant who plays on your team without a membership will cause your team to receive a forfeit.  Many participants believe they have completed a membership transaction when in fact they have not.  Adding a player online is the only way to verify the player has a valid membership.  Protect your team from receiving a forfeit by only adding players to your roster online.

DID YOU KNOW?

ID CHECKS

Picture identification checks occur before every Intramural Sports contest.  Failure to provide an acceptable form of identification will result in not being allowed to participate in Intramural Sports on that day.  Absolutely no exceptions will be made.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS

Current membership is required for all Intramural Sports participants.  Teams that use players without a current membership will forfeit every game in which those players participated.  Teams with forfeits do not advance to the playoffs.

It is possible that a player you added to your roster during the RSF grace period is no longer a CRC member or dropped from the membership rolls for some other reason.  These players will be listed as "INELIGIBLE" on your gameday roster.

Eligibility for Intramural Sports

  1. Cal Students who have purchased the Cal Rec Club (CRC) Student Membership ($10/semester).
  2. Cal Rec Club (CRC) Members.

CAPTAINS: Intramural Sports can assist you in determining if all members of your team are eligible CRC members. Using players who do not have a current and valid CRC membership or ineligible highly competitive athletes will cause you to forfeit all games in which they participated. Teams receiving at least one forfeit during the regular season are not eligible for the playoffs.

FAIRPLAY RATINGS

FairPlay (sportsmanship) ratings are based on 5-point scale.  In order for a team to advance to the playoffs, teams must accumulate a FairPlay rating of 3.5 or better.  It is the Team Manager’s responsibility to verify the FairPlay rating and score after each game.

THERE ARE SEVERE PENALTIES FOR FIGHTING DURING INTRAMURAL SPORTS

Our definition of fighting is extensive and includes aggressive actions some might not consider fighting.

The penalty for fighting is a minimum 1-year suspension from Intramural Sports.

Behavior classified as fighting includes, but is not limited to:

  • striking or attempting to strike an individual.
  • engaging an individual in a combative manner.
  • throwing a punch at an individual.
  • spitting at an individual.
  • kicking or attempting to kick an individual.
  • brandishing a foreign object or weapon with intent to harm, injure, or intimidate an individual.
  • retaliating against an aggressive act.

Rules Governing General Behavior

  • NO alcohol, drugs or tobacco products are allowed at Intramural Sports sites before, during or after Intramural Sports activities.
  • Intramural Sports Staff reserves the right to restrict play or eject anyone even suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Assumption of Risks

Participation in Intramural Sports carries with it certain inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to avoid injuries. The specific risks vary from one activity to another, but the risks range from 1) minor injuries such as scratches, bruises, and sprains to 2) major injuries such as eye injury or loss of sight, joint or back injuries, heart attacks, and concussions to 3) catastrophic injuries including paralysis and death.

Attention Maxwell Family Field Participants

The turf surface at Maxwell Family Field is a high performance surface designed to be irrigated prior to selected activities. The irrigation procedure benefits both the playing conditions and athlete safety as the footing is not as stiff and abrasions are significantly reduced.

As for intramural and recreational activities, the same positive benefits should apply, as long as the proper footwear is used. A very smooth-surfaced shoe would not be the preferred option as this may result in some slipping. An aggressive running shoe or molded rubber cleat might be more appropriate.

It is recommended all Intramural Sports participants on Maxwell Family Field wear an aggressive running shoe or molded rubber cleat and avoid smooth-surfaced shoes such as tennis shoes.
